Lyme Education: Ballston Spa, NY

SUNY Adirondack and Cornell Cooperative Extension of Warren County will host two free “Don’t Get Ticked” workshops in February to educate the public about the dangers of tick-borne diseases.

Programs are planned from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. Friday, Feb. 15, at the 4-H Training Center, 556 Middle Line Road in Ballston Spa and from 3 to 5 p.m. Friday, Feb. 22, at the Northwest Bay Conference Center on the SUNY Adirondack Campus in Queensbury.

Ticks and tick-borne diseases have become a significant public health issue in New York, with different tick species and diseases currently present and spreading within the state and region, according to New York State Integrated Pest Management. Learning where ticks are on the rise and steps to take to avoid being bitten are important preventive measures.

The “Don’t Get Ticked” workshop will feature presentations by Dan Durkee of the Warren County Public Health Department and SUNY Adirondack Professor of Microbiology Holly Ahern.

Durkee will talk about where ticks are most prevalent, best strategies to avoid getting bitten and what to do if bitten. Ahern will give a tick-borne disease update, including information about the latest medical responses to tick bites and associated diseases.

A question-and-answer session will follow each presentation.

Pre-registration is required. Participants can register by emailing Dan ([email protected]), Chris ([email protected]) or Michele ([email protected]) or by calling 518-668-4881.
