Dear Friends,

With heavy hearts, we come together to honor the memory of Patricia Smith, who passed away on August 17, 2024. Pat was a fierce advocate and cherished leader within the Lyme disease community. She dedicated her life to the fight against Lyme disease, leading the Lyme Disease Association (LDA) with incredible passion, advancing research, education, and patient care through decades of tireless work.

Pat's legacy is immense and deeply inspiring. Her journey—from her first outreach to a congressman in 1992 to becoming a founding member of ILADS—touched countless lives and continues to make a difference today. As founding members of Global Lyme Alliance (GLA), we are particularly proud to have partnered with her and LDA to establish the Columbia Lyme and Tick-Borne Disease Research Center, a monumental achievement that stands as a testament to her influence and dedication.

The bond we shared with Pat was deeply personal. All three of us were brought together by our fight against Lyme disease for our children, and that connection fueled our determination to make a difference. Pat's guidance and friendship through the darkest days strengthened us, and together we became a united force for the Lyme disease community.

Pat was a remarkable advocate who testified before Congress, contributed to federal policy, and collaborated with national organizations, including the EPA, the LymeX Innovation Accelerator, and the HHS (Health and Human Services) Tick-Borne Disease Working Group. She relentlessly pursued justice for patients, and her work will have lasting effects for years to come.

On a personal level, Pat was more than a colleague; she was our mentor. In the early days, she took us under her wing and taught us how to fight for right. She was the conscience of the Lyme community at a time when the disease was sorely misunderstood while suffering patients were disrespected and disbelieved. She provided invaluable guidance and support. Her strength, wisdom, and compassion were instrumental to our success, and we will always be grateful for her generosity of spirit. GLA is where it is today because of Pat's influence.

Pat, your resolute commitment, and gentle heart will continue to inspire us as we carry your mission forward. Our thoughts are with her family and all who had the privilege to know her. When Lyme disease is finally defeated, it will be thanks to the foundation you laid many years ago.

With deepest sympathy,
