Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, many Lyme disease fundraising events have been postponed or canceled, including Global Lyme Alliance’s (GLA) second-largest regional fundraiser in Chicago, The SubLyme Soireé.
In lieu of a physical Summer event, I hosted two virtual events along with Meghan Bradshaw, called Lyme Warriors Live to help raise funds for GLA and critical tick-borne disease research. We are thrilled that through the generosity of our community, we were able to raise $15,000 in a few short weeks!
The first event on June 22nd kicked off emotional and raw patient conversations discussing Lyme disease and mental health. The brave advocates of our community shared their trials, tribulations, and wins with tick-borne illness.
Thursday night’s Lyme Warriors Live featured a lively cocktail class with renowned mixologist Revae Schneider of Simplicité. Viewers also tuned in to a conversation with GLA board member, Lyme advocate, and equestrian Erin Walker, and acclaimed health journalist and patient advocate, Jenny Buttaccio. Walker’s sentiments left attendees with hope for the future.
In 2021, there will be approximately half a million new cases of Lyme disease in the United States (and that is just what we know of—and doesn't include co-infections). Lyme disease is difficult to diagnose due to lack of education, inaccurate testing, and various masquerading symptoms, which is why it's called “the great imitator.” Global Lyme Alliance is changing the narrative around Lyme disease.
A special thank you to the event participants, Erin Walker, Jennifer Buttaccio, Trish Baden, Victoria Kotowski, Emily Levy, Hannah Olson, Rhisa Parera, Laura Najarian, Emma Franklin and Jennifer Delgado, for sharing your journey with our community.
We hope you'll join us for a small, in-person Global Lyme Alliance brunch in Chicago on September 30th, 2021.
I fundraise for GLA to support much-needed research efforts to develop reliable diagnostic testing and effective treatments. GLA has awarded nearly $12 million for Lyme and tick-borne disease research to date. GLA needs our support to help fund new projects in 2021 to help improve patients’ lives.
